Arctic Wolf is proud to honor this year’s Black History Month theme of Taking Action and Elevating Our Potential. We’re doing this with a series of activities throughout the month of February to honor the achievements of Black people through history, while celebrating and amplifying members of Arctic Wolf’s Black Employee Pack Unity Alliance.

Today, we’re sharing the perspective of Bimie Shittu, a technical operations manager and member of our Black Employee Pack Unity Alliance.

Can you share a bit about your personal journey in the cybersecurity field? What initially drew you to this industry and inspired you to pursue a career in it?

After about a decade of experience as a core network engineer in Africa, I emigrated to Canada in search of international exposure. While I had been a victim of cyber theft, ending this act was top on my list of to-dos. As a new immigrant, I applied for a Bridging Program at Humber College. This began my journey into helping networks become more secure against various cybercrime.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

To me, Black History Month is a remembrance that even in confinement, innovation and change can still be achieved.

What about the theme of this year — to take action and elevate your potential?

I am taking intentional action by stepping out of my comfort zone and seeking feedback, which are contributing to my personal and professional development while elevating my potential and helping me achieve my goals.

How has the Pack Unity initiative played a role in your growth at Arctic Wolf?

It has helped me to be more confident by gracing me with mentorship opportunities.

How do you hope to see the cybersecurity industry evolve, especially in terms of inclusivity?

By encouraging and supporting underrepresented groups who are pursuing education and training in cybersecurity through scholarships, mentorship programs, and outreach initiatives.

What advice do you have for people starting their career or looking to become a leader in their workplace?

Continuous learning and collaborating with others are good skills to have to become a leader in any workplace.
