Arctic Wolf is proud to honor this year’s Black History Month theme of Taking action and elevating our potential. We’re doing this with a series of activities throughout the month of February to honor the achievements of Black people through history, while celebrating and amplifying members of Arctic Wolf’s Black Employee Pack Unity Alliance.
Today, we’re sharing the perspective of Oluwagbenga Karunwi, a Professional Services Engineer 1 and member of our Black Employee Pack Unity Alliance.
Can you share a bit about your personal journey in the cybersecurity field? What initially drew you to this industry and inspired you to pursue a career in it?
My journey into cybersecurity has been an interesting one, filled with numerous learning opportunities and chances for improvement. Coming from a networking background, I can confidently say that my transition into the cybersecurity industry has been a fulfilling experience.
What drew me into cybersecurity is my passion for learning and exploring new technologies and the desire to protect systems from cyber threats. The cybersecurity industry offers endless opportunities to hone my skills and knowledge, and I find it exciting to keep up with the latest trends and developments in the field.
Exploring the vast and complex world of cybersecurity has been a journey of self-discovery and growth. I have learned to be analytical, meticulous, and proactive in my approach to work, and have developed a deep appreciation for the importance of cybersecurity in protecting businesses and individuals from cyber threats.
Overall, my journey into cybersecurity has been a fun and rewarding experience, and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow in this ever-evolving industry.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
To me, Black History Month is a time I acknowledge the pivotal roles Black individuals have played in various fields, including science, technology, literature, arts, politics, and civil rights. It is a time to learn, educate, and celebrate the rich history and culture of Black people. It is a reminder of the resilience and strength of the Black community, who have overcome oppression and adversity to make significant contributions to society.
What about the theme of this year — to take action and elevate your potential?
This year, I am determined to break the roof of self-limitation and push beyond my perceived boundaries. We often underestimate our capabilities until we take a step forward and try something new. To anyone reading this, I encourage you to roll up your sleeves and step up to the plate this year.
I understand that pursuing my goals is a continuous journey that requires dedication, perseverance, and the willingness to overcome obstacles. I can achieve my aspirations through action and make meaningful contributions to industry and society. Each step forward, no matter how small, brings me closer to elevating my potential and realizing my dreams.
This year, I am committed to embracing every challenge and opportunity that comes my way. I am excited to learn, grow, and push beyond my limits, and I look forward to the journey ahead with enthusiasm and determination.

How has the Pack Unity initiative played a role in your growth at Arctic Wolf?
Undoubtedly, The Pack Unity Alliance is an outstanding initiative that has immensely contributed to my personal and professional growth at Arctic Wolf. My journey here has been nothing short of amazing. I am proud to be a part of the Pack, and I feel fortunate to work for an organization that values and respects my identity, regardless of my background or origin. The leadership’s commitment to investing in The Pack Unity initiative is especially inspiring, and it creates a sense of safety and belonging within the organization. It is a pleasure to work for a company that prioritizes diversity, inclusion, and the wellbeing of its employees. I feel safe here!
How do you hope to see the cybersecurity industry evolve, especially in terms of inclusivity?
I am excited about the prospect of seeing more representation of women and people of color in the male-dominated cybersecurity space. It is important to have diversity in this industry, as it brings different perspectives and approaches to solving problems. By having a more diverse workforce, we can create a more inclusive and effective cybersecurity community that better reflects the society we live in.
I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their passions and thrive in their chosen careers, regardless of their gender, race, or ethnicity. I look forward to seeing more women and people of color breaking barriers and making significant contributions to the cybersecurity industry.
What advice do you have for people starting their career or looking to become a leader in their workplace?
To anyone looking to pursue a career in cybersecurity, I would encourage you to go for it! However, it is essential to approach this ever-changing industry with a willingness to learn and get your hands dirty. Cybersecurity is a field that demands continuous learning and adaptation to innovative technology and threats. Therefore, it is vital to stay abreast of the latest developments and maintain a curious and proactive approach to work.
For those seeking to become leaders in their workplace, my advice would be to show up and make your presence count. Visibility and proactiveness are critical ingredients to becoming a leader in any workplace. Be willing to provide support to your team and organization, and offer creative and innovative solutions to challenges. It is also essential to cultivate effective communication skills, foster positive relationships with colleagues, and maintain a positive attitude.
