Arctic Wolf is celebrating the heritage and history of the members of our Black Employee Alliance this month with a series of events that support our ability to thrive as individuals and collectively in our careers, mental health and personal lives. We’re looking forward to intentionally amplifying Black voices, enriching our knowledge of Black history, and taking learning and connection opportunities with our colleagues throughout the Pack.

Today, we’re spotlighting Mayokun Oni, a Deployment Project Manager and member of our Black Employee Alliance in our Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario office.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and heritage?

I was born in Lagos, Nigeria, which is in the West-African Subcontinent. I am of Yoruba descent. I had a warm and happy childhood growing up in Nigeria and only moved to Canada about four years ago. I started my career as an Internal Auditor after studying Accounting in the University, however, I participated in the Accelerated Cybersecurity Training Program and transitioned into Cybersecurity focusing on Project Management.

How has your race or ethnicity affected your workplace experiences?

Arctic Wolf has an amazing culture with values such as Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging. I have not experienced racial discrimination within the company, I am proud to be a member of the Pack.

However, my race has played a part in my workplace experiences. I have experienced subtle biases and challenges in my career. I have been able to rise above them and not allow these encounters to stop me from showing up and being the best version of myself daily.

There is also the issue of some cultural nuances. I choose to be open to learning and navigating my way through my career one day at a time.

What is your mantra or motto?

My mantras are to “never give up,” “keep pushing through barriers” and “it is never too late to start over.”

How do you think your unique perspective and experiences have contributed to the company/team?

It helps me see things from other people’s perspective. I often tend to try to find connections with people as I notice them, and this typically goes a long way to aid communication and effective teamwork.

I also believe in taking responsibility and seeking opportunities for improvement. The Yoruba are a very industrious and energetic race and I believe having this influence has helped shaped how I engage with the world around me.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

It is great to have a month specifically set aside to celebrate Black achievements, excellence, and culture. This is a month dedicated to celebrating Black people or people that identify as Black. It is an opportunity to educate and inform, as well as highlight our uniqueness. It is an opportunity to acknowledge our history and celebrate our progress. It is a time to elevate Black voices and seek ways to foster positive change around us.

What are the benefits of having a diverse company/workforce?

It helps to ensure that diverse and inclusive decisions are being made. It ensures representation across the company and encourages a sense of belonging. Employees feel that it is a safe space when they see other people like themselves. It gives a sense of comfort that their race/ ethnicity would not hinder them from growing within the company into leadership positions.

What advice do you have for people starting their career or looking to become a leader in their workplace?

  1. Keep your eyes on the prize, have a goal in mind and work towards it. Do not give up even if you are told “no,” instead keep seeking opportunities for growth.
  2. Continue to develop yourself and learn skills. It is never too late to start again, just keep pushing and if you fall, get up and move forward.
  3. Make connections, expand your horizons, and if possible, have a mentor.
